A friend of mine encountered the story "The Death of Koshchey the Undying" when she was young and has always been puzzled as to how he came to be chained up in the dungeon/closet/boxroom/turret in the first place. Somehow we got to talking about the story and I said I would try to find out. Your excellent "Prince Ivan" is the first place I have been able to find an explanation, but I need to know: was that explanantion (about the father, the proposed alliance and the unacceptable price demanded) derived from a Russian original (if so: what, when, how, where, why??) or did you draw on your own inspiration to fill in the gap?
I hope you do still read comments on this site (even if the construction seems to be taking a very long time) and will be able to put us out of our misery soon.
